Basketball Recap: Animas Takes a Loss

Animas lost against Magdalena back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Animas Panthers took a blow against the Magdalena Steers, falling 65-36. The Panthers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Loss or not, Animas got some senior leadership from Laikyn Davenport and Journey Sheehan. Davenport posted 22 points, while Sheehan had seven points and ten rebounds. Sheehan has become a key player for Animas: the team is undefeated when she posts at least eight boards, but 2-8 otherwise.

Even though they lost, Animas smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 16 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Jorianne Mirabal continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Magdalena, dropping a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Mirabal has scored at least a third of Magdalena's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jema Ganadonegro, who put up 17 points along with five assists and three steals.

Animas now has a losing record at 7-8. As for Magdalena, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-4.

Animas will face off against Reserve at 5:00 p.m. on January 30th. As for Magdalena, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 45-43 win against Cliff on the 25th.
