Football Game Preview: Payson Lions vs. Orem Tigers

The Payson Lions will head out to challenge the Orem Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Payson has given up an average of 39.4 points per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Having struggled with four defeats in a row, Payson turned things around against Wasatch on Friday. They managed a 37-33 victory over the Wasps. The win almost wasn't to be: the Lions were down 19-0 in the second quarter.

Trevyn Wall produced another solid effort throwing for 432 yards and four TDs, while also rushing for 53 yards and one touchdown. That's the most passing touchdowns he has posted since back in October of 2024. Payson's leading receiver Carson Wall was Trevyn's top target yet again, picking up 148 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Another reason for the win was Payson's imposing defensive line, which managed to get into the backfield for 3.5 sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Cade Muir, Mitchell Jensen, and Adrian Enriquez-Barahona, who each picked up one sack apiece.

Meanwhile, Orem humbled Pleasant Grove with a 50-7 victory. With the Tigers ahead 42-7 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Orem's record is now 6-2. As for Payson, their victory was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 2-6.

Payson took a serious blow against Orem in their previous meeting back in October of 2018, falling 63-0. Thankfully for the Lions, Cooper Legas (who rushed for 150 yards and four TDs on only eight carries, and also threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns while completing 76% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time.
