Football Recap: Elkhart Piles Up the Points Against Mishawaka Marian

The matchup between Elkhart and Mishawaka Marian on Friday hardly resembled the 26-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Lions blew past the Knights 59-14. The Lions' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Micah Jarrell continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 134 yards and a pair of TDs on only 12 carries, while also throwing for 168 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 passes. He also punched in two rushing touchdowns, which is notable because Elkhart is undefeated when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns, but 1-3 otherwise. Alfonzo Newbern was another key player, rushing for 57 yards and two scores on only six carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Elkhart was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 254 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 172 rushing yards in six consecutive contests.

Elkhart didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Cole Bell, Josiah Gladden, Keyon MacNeal, and Matt Alshahrani picked up one apiece. Alshahrani has been hot recently, having also posted at least one defended passe the last four times he's played.

Elkhart pushed their record up to 5-3 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 35.1 points over those games. As for Mishawaka Marian, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6.
