Soccer Game Preview: Mathews vs. Middlesex

The Mathews Blue Devils will challenge the Middlesex Chargers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Mathews has given up an average of 3.6 goals per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mathews is headed into Monday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Wednesday. They came up short against West Point, falling 8-0. While losing is never fun, Mathews can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia soccer rankings (they are ranked 271st, while West Point are ranked 108th).

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday Middlesex sidestepped Nandua for a 2-1 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Middlesex.

Mathews' loss was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 3-4. As for Middlesex, their victory bumped their record up to 5-3.

Everything went Mathews' way against Middlesex in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Mathews made off with a 6-3 win. Do the Blue Devils have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Chargers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
