Softball Recap: Apex Cougars vs. New Bern Bears        
        
		
            
 After having lost a blowout in their  previous game against Panther Creek, Apex was happy to have turned things around  on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the New Bern Bears  and snuck past  4-3. That's more bragging rights for Apex, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.
  Alyssa Kaufman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered  just two earned  (and one unearned) runs on eight hits.
 On the hitting side,  the team  relied heavily on  Anamie Whittlesey, who  scored two  runs and  stole two bases while  getting on base  in three of her four plate appearances. She is on a roll when it comes to  stolen bases, as she's  now  stolen  at least one in the last six games she's  played.  Leah Kendall was another key contributor,  scoring a  run and  stealing two bases while going 2-for-4.
 On New Bern's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in:  Anna Champey gave up three earned  (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 11 Ks.
 At the plate,  Codi Mann made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and  went 2-for-2 with a  triple, two  RBI,  and a  double. Another player making a difference was  Ki?mya Sutton, who  scored two  runs and  stole a base while going 1-for-3.
 Apex is  on a roll lately: they've  won four of their last five matchups,  which provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record  this season. As for New Bern, their defeat  ended  a  four-game streak of wins at home  and  dropped them to 13-4.
 Both  teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Apex will take on Apex Friendship at 6:00  p.m.  on Tuesday. Apex Friendship knows how to get  runs on the board -- the  squad has finished with flashy  run totals in its past three contests -- so hopefully Apex likes a good challenge. As for New Bern, they will look to defend their home field  on Tuesday against J.H. Rose at 6:00  p.m.
