Fort Morgan extended their winning streak to four on Monday, bumping their season record up to 9-9 in the process. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 11-10 W against The Academy Wildcats. That's two games straight that the Mustangs have won by just one run.
JJ Marquez looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Samson Ortega was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Fort Morgan: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 3-9 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Chase Prouty, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one double.
Fort Morgan kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.
As for The Academy, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-12. Even if they couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
On The Academy's side, Brennan Staudinger put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Furthermore, Staudinger didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in May of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Dylan Akers made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Kameron Forsyth was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Coming up, Fort Morgan is taking a road trip to challenge Resurrection Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Mustangs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 7.3 runs per game this season. As for The Academy, they will host Jefferson Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats are facing the Jaguars at the right time seeing as the Jaguars are stuck on an eight-game losing streak.
