League recap: Monte Vista tops Centauri to extend winning streak

Monte Vista extended the longest winning streak in 1A Southern Peaks this week by beating Centauri, 21-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Pirates.

Monte Vista made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 7,853 from 8,341. The advance stemmed from a 21-6 victory over the Falcons last week.

Greg Jones' team's dynamic duo of Michael Sanchez and Mitch Vanderpool proved tough for Centauri to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Sanchez threw for 83 yards and Vanderpool had 39 yards receiving. Jeff Cooper helped Monte Vista's passing attack out by catching three balls for 24 yards.

Colin Trujillo was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 15 carries, he ran for 133 yards as Del Norte topped Kyle Forster's team. Teammate Austin McDonald added to the ground attack by rushing for 57 yards.

The Falcons' KC Jarvies and Clay McCarroll have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Jarvies has thrown for 653 yards this season, while McCarroll, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 14 catches for 322 yards. Shadron Wenta from Monte Vista leads the league in rushing with 1088 yards.

In 77 carries McDonald has accumulated 958 yard this year.

Dolores led 1A Southern Peaks in scoring this week after putting up 47 points on Ignacio. Chaz Thompson ran for 109 yards in the win.
