Football Recap: Stoneman Douglas Starts Season with Win Against Olympic Heights

Stoneman Douglas had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. Their defense stepped up to hand the Olympic Heights Lions a 25-0 shutout on Tuesday. That's more bragging rights for the Eagles, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Stoneman Douglas was led to victory by Courtney Heymach and Samantha Calavetta. Heymach gained 86 total yards and two touchdowns, while Calavetta threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The dominant performance also gave Heymach a new career-high in rushing yards (75).

Stoneman Douglas didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Savannah Tenore.

Olympic Heights' loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Stoneman Douglas will head out to square off against Coral Glades at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Olympic Heights, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Lions duke it out with the Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
