League recap: Cordova tops St. Benedict at Auburndale to extend winning streak

Adding to the longest winning streak in AAA District 14 this week, Cordova beat St. Benedict at Auburndale 35-31. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Wolves.

Charles Taylor was a beast in the backfield as Cordova defeated the Eagles.

Taylor was a passing and rushing force as Anthony Jones, Jr.'s team bested St. Benedict at Auburndale. Taylor's favorite target this week was Marquis Ward, who caught 6 passes for 75 yards.

Taylor was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 230 yards on 27 carries as the Wolves beat Michael Davidson's team. Teammate Jireh Fordham added to the ground attack by rushing for 85 yards.

The leading receiver in the league this season is Ward. The Cordova star has 40 catches for 705 yards.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Arlington takes on second place Cordova.

Bolton's Darian Nave needs only 2 yards against Millington Central next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 158 carries Nave has accumulated 998 yard this year.

Going into this week's contest against Cordova, Arlington's Hunter Sheffield needs 149 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season. So far this year, Sheffield has thrown for 1,851 yards with 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

One of AAA District 14's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when the Tigers and the Wolves face off next week.

Next week's game between Arlington and Cordova will feature an aerial matchup as Sheffield tests his arm against Molefi Maat's defensive ability.

There should be lots of points scored when the Wolves and Chris Wiley's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Cordova comes in having scored 251 this season, while the Tigers have scored 301. The Wolves scored 35 points last week as they defeated the Eagles.

Cordova led the league in scoring this week after putting up 35 points on St. Benedict at Auburndale. Taylor ran for 230 yards in the win.
