Baseball Recap: Mercersburg Academy Gets the Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Blair Academy, Mercersburg Academy was happy to have turned things around on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over the GVCS Broadfording Lions. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Storm have posted since May 11, 2024.

Ethan Shirk made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those stolen bases marked the first that he has snagged this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gavin Williams, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Nick Rosenberry also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Mercersburg Academy's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-9-1. As for GVCS Broadfording, their loss dropped their record down to 10-9.

Coming up, Mercersburg Academy will be playing in front of their home fans against Kiski School at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for GVCS Broadfording, they will square off against North Hagerstown at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
