4A/3A Conference 17 recap October 8, 2013

South Brunswick fell to Laney 42-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Hoggard and New Hanover played the most contested game in 4A/3A Conference 17 this week, with Hoggard eventually emerging with a 21-18 victory. Randall Emerson threw for 26 yards and 1 touchdown and caught 6 passes for 87 yards during the win.

Josh Jessup provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Topsail lost to Ashley. Jessup's key target this week was Tyler Andrews, who caught 3 passes for 29 yards.

Cole Hobbs was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Vikings topped the Wildcats. He racked up 1 sack.

Xavier Johnson put up the best numbers in passing as Hoggard bested New Hanover. He finished with 4 completions for 60 yards and 1 touchdown. Johnson's favorite target this week was Emerson, who caught 6 passes for 87 yards.

Scott Braswell's team's Austin Schoenleber and Emerson led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Schoenleber has thrown for 515 yards this season, while Emerson has 26 catches for 369 yards. Chris Kane from the Screaming Eagle leads the league in rushing with 597 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Ashley takes on Kevin Motsinger's team. Tom Eanes' team is currently in third, while the Wildcats are in fourth.

The Screaming Eagle made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,550 from 6,117. The improvement was the result of a 26-0 victory over the Pirates last week.
