Recap: Red Springs Red Devils vs. Clinton Dark Horses
The Red Springs Red Devils's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their sixth straight loss. They fell just short of Clinton by a score of 36-33. The match was a 14-14 toss-up at halftime, but Red Springs was outscored by Clinton in the second.
When it comes to explaining why Red Springs lost, one person who can't be blamed is Monica Washington. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. Washington is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nakira Hunt, who scored eight points along with seven steals and five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Red Springs smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. This was only their ninth loss (out of 11 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Clinton found their leader in underclassman DaNiyah Coxum, who scored eight points along with six steals. Another player making a difference was Janiya Mosley, who scored six points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Red Springs bumped their record down to 2-12 with that defeat, which was their tenth straight on the road. As for Clinton, their victory bumped their record up to 8-3.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Red Springs will take on Fairmont at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fairmont presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Red Springs in North Carolina (Fairmont is ranked 70th, while Red Springs is ranked 455th). As for Clinton, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Midway at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully Midway focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Friday.
