Basketball Game Preview: Eagle River Wolves vs. Chugiak Mustangs

Eagle River hasn't had much luck against Chugiak recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Eagle River Wolves are taking a road trip to square off against the Chugiak Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. Eagle River has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Eagle River is headed into the match out to prove that what happened against Bartlett on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Eagle River was outmatched by Bartlett and fell 63-33. While losing is never fun, the Wolves can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alaska basketball rankings (they are ranked 100th, while the Golden Bears are ranked fifth).

Gabby Palazzini put forth a good effort for the losing side as she dropped a double-double with 20 points and ten boards. The contest was her fifth in a row with at least 15 points. Katelyn Bell also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Chugiak). They blew past Bettye Davis East Anchorage 60-21 on Saturday. The win continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Thunderbirds: they've now won eight in a row.

Eagle River's defeat dropped their record down to 2-12. As for Chugiak, the victory got them back to even at 8-8.

Eagle River skirted past Chugiak 36-34 when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Does Eagle River have another victory up their sleeve, or will Chugiak turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
