The Buena Park Coyotes will head out on the road to square off against the Laguna Hills Hawks at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Buena Park has three straight wins, Laguna Hills has 11 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Laguna Hills' hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Friday: Buena Park hadn't allowed a single run the last three times they've hit the field. The Coyotes were the clear victors by a 6-0 margin over Katella last Wednesday. Considering the Coyotes have won nine matches by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
The result came thanks to Mia Gonzalez's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up 14 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 13 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Lily Phillips and Layla Hinojos did most of the damage at the plate: Phillips went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs, while Hinojos went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Laguna Hills challenged Calvary Chapel on Wednesday. The Hawks came up short against the Eagles, falling 20-6.
Iris Martinez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Samira Bones Lopez also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.
Buena Park pushed their record up to 11-8 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.0 runs on average over those games. As for Laguna Hills, their loss dropped their record down to 1-11.
Everything went Buena Park's way against Laguna Hills when the teams last played two weeks ago, as Buena Park made off with a 14-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Coyotes since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
