Baseball Recap: Payson Takes Down Cottonwood in a Playoff Battle

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Payson walked away with it. They came out on top against the Cottonwood Colts by a score of 14-9 on Saturday. That's two games straight that the Lions have won by exactly five runs.

Payson got a massive performance out of Ty Marvin, who went 1-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Marvin has become a key player for the Lions: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 8-16 otherwise. Maddux DeGraffenried was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Payson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .532. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.

Payson has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-17 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Cottonwood, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 15-10.

Looking ahead, Payson will take on Ridgeline at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Riverhawks will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something the Lions surely won't give up without a fight. Cottonwood does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
