Softball Game Preview: Kouts Mustangs & Fillies vs. Boone Grove Wolves

Kouts is 0-10 against Boone Grove since April of 2016 but things could change on Friday. The Mustangs & Fillies will host the Wolves at 4:30 p.m. The match will give Kouts their first taste of in-conference action this season.

Kouts came out on top against North White on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run fourth inning. The Mustangs & Fillies walked away with a 6-1 win over the Vikings. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs & Fillies in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now won three in a row.

Katelyn Kleckner spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Cassie Breitzke, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Reese Carden, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run.

Two must be Boone Grove's lucky number: they beat Illiana Christian with that score not once but twice on Thursday. The Wolves beat the Vikings by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 2-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Wolves.

Boone Grove also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Amanda Powell gave up only one earned run on four hits and racked up eight Ks. Those eight strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Powell.

On the hitting side, Boone Grove's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Mercedes Szakacs, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double. That double was Szakacs' first of the season.

Boone Grove's victory bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Kouts, their win bumped their record up to 2-3.
