Football Game Preview: Gilmer Buckeyes vs. Brenham Cubs

The Gilmer Buckeyes will take on the Brenham Cubs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Gilmer has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with three straight losses, while Brenham will come in with four straight victories.

Last Friday, Gilmer came up short against Lindale and fell 35-23.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Zade Taylor, who threw for 309 yards and three TDs while picking up 12.9 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 57 yards. Trace Haynes was Taylor's top target, picking up 124 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Brenham had just enough and edged out Killeen 15-13 on Friday. Given the Cubs' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 103rd, while the Kangaroos are ranked 429th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

A big part of Brenham's win came down to the chemistry between Chris Guidry and his top target Cartelle Brown. Guidry picked up 33 receiving yards and one score while Brown picked up 64 receiving yards and one TD.

One reason for the win was Brenham's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Brooks Roznovsky and Doyle Brown, who racked up four sacks between them. With that strong performance, Roznovsky is now averaging an impressive 6 total tackles per game.

Brenham's victory bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Gilmer, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.

Gilmer strolled past Brenham when the teams last played back in September of 2024 by a score of 51-37. Will the Buckeyes repeat their success, or do the Cubs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
