Basketball Recap: Lovington Takes a Loss

Lovington lost against Portales last Friday, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Lovington Wildcats fell just short of the Portales Rams by a score of 45-42. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Wildcats have suffered since March 8, 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Lovington lost, don't look at Malaiya Castro. Despite the final result, she shot 63% from the field en route to 20 points and eight boards. The dominant performance gave Castro a new career-high in rebounds. Another player making a difference was Abigail Shouse, who posted four points in addition to ten boards and four blocks.

Lovington's loss dropped their record down to 16-12. As for Portales, the win was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-9.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Lovington will challenge Hope Christian at 6:00 p.m. on March 7th. Lovington is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50 points per game this season. As for Portales, they will take on Shiprock at 6:00 p.m. on March 7th.
