Football Recap: Hyannis Longhorns vs. Mullen Broncos
Hyannis lost against Mullen back in September of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Longhorns were outmatched by the Broncos and fell 54-16. The Longhorns were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 34-8.
Despite the loss, Hyannis saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Levi Merrihew rushed for 181 yards while picking up 10.6 yards per carry.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Alex Werner and Nicholas Gonzalez. Werner rushed for 125 yards and one touchdown while Gonzalez rushed for 61 yards and a pair of TDs. Those 61 rushing yards gave Gonzalez a new career-high.
This is the second loss in a row for Hyannis and nudges their season record down to 1-4. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 3-1 Maxwell (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 87.5% over those games). As for Mullen, the win keeps them at an undefeated 5-0.
We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Hyannis will take on rival Bayard at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Mullen is set to face off against their familiar foe Maxwell at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
