Baseball Preview: Columbia Wildcats vs. Lawrence County Cougars

Columbia is a perfect 6-0 against Lawrence County since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Columbia Wildcats will be playing at home against the Lawrence County Cougars at 2:00 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Friday, Columbia needed a bit of extra time to put away West Marion. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Trojans 8-7.

MT Breland and Dillon Rowley were a major factor no matter where they played. On the mound, Breland struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Rowley tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. At the plate, Breland scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances, while Rowley scored two runs and stole four bases while going 3-for-5. The dominant performance gave Rowley a new career-high in stolen bases.

In other batting news, Greyson Carney was excellent, getting on base in all six of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI. What's more, he also posted three hits, the most he's had since back in March of 2024.

Like Columbia, Lawrence County also got a great game from a two-way player: Caden Case. He didn't allow a single earned run and only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Case was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hunter Turner, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Grey Boyd was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-4.
