Bunn is 0-7 against Rocky Mount since December of 2021 but things could change on Wednesday. The two teams will face off at 6:00 p.m. without much rest having both just played. That match will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Makayla Richardson and Kira Jones.
Bunn is headed into Wednesday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their sixth straight game on Tuesday. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 41-39 heartbreaker at the hands of Southern Nash.
Despite the defeat, Bunn saw an underclassman step up: freshman Richardson posted 21 points along with six boards and four steals. That was a full 53.8% of Bunn's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points. Ny'Lah Mitchell was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 17 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Rocky Mount came tearing into Tuesday's contest with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They claimed a resounding 83-27 victory over the Yellowjackets. Given the Gryphons' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 47th, while the Yellowjackets are ranked 404th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Bunn better keep an eye on Jones. She was instrumental in Rocky Mount's win, going 15 for 17 en route to 33 points and five boards. Jones' evening made it 14 games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Trinity Dunn, who earned six points and four steals.
Rocky Mount was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.
Rocky Mount pushed their record up to 14-1 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.4 points per game. As for Bunn, their loss dropped their record down to 7-12.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Bunn has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.6 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Rocky Mount struggles in that department as they've been averaging 29.7 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
