Baseball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Watauga

Watauga had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the seven-run drubbing they dealt St. Vincent-St. Mary on Thursday. The Pioneers were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Fighting Irish. Nine seems to be a good number for the Pioneers as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Jake Blanton and Maddox Greene did most of the damage at the plate: Blanton went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Greene went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Blanton is becoming a predictor of Watauga's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 9-10 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Evan Burroughs, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

The win (which was Watauga's fifth in a row) raised their record to 13-11. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for St. Vincent-St. Mary, they moved to 7-4 with that defeat, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Watauga will look to defend their home field on Monday against Ashe County at 6:00 p.m. As for St. Vincent-St. Mary, they have already played their next game, a 9-7 loss against Highland Regional on the 25th.
