Basketball Recap: Keiryn Mann's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Monument Valley over Chinle

Monument Valley fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Chinle on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Chinle Wildcats 61-56. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 45th, while the Wildcats are ranked third).

Monument Valley lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Keiryn Mann, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 15 boards. Those 15 rebounds gave Mann a new career-high. Meggan Sandoval was another key player, putting up 20 points.

Qoah Yazzie was her usual excellent self, going 7 for 15 en route to 22 points in addition to six boards and five assists for Chinle. Yazzie has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Dizhoon White, who posted 14 points and four steals.

Monument Valley has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-10 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.3 points per game. As for Chinle, the win (which was their 13th in a row) raised their record to 22-1.

Monument Valley has already played their next game, a 52-47 victory against Holbrook on the 25th. As for Chinle, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 44-42 win against Page on the 28th.
