Softball Recap: Athens Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Athens ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out the Towanda Knights 3-2. The win continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Knights: they've now won five in a row.

Gretchan Hiley made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over eight innings while giving up just two earned runs off nine hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs.

Hiley wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Danica May, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. That's the most RBI May has posted since back in March.

Athens' record is now 11-2. As for Towanda, they moved to 13-3 with that loss, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Athens didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 7-3 victory against Canton on the 7th. As for Towanda, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 10-0 win against Cowanesque Valley on the 5th.
