Preview: Russell Red Devils vs. Blazer Tomcats
Russell is on a eight-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Blazer is on a seven-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Russell Red Devils will take on the Blazer Tomcats at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
You can't lose the contest if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Russell's strategy against Raceland on Saturday. Russell was the clear victor by a 79-53 margin over Raceland. Given Russell's advantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while Raceland is ranked 137th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Russell's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Shaelyn Steele, who dropped a double-double on 26 points and ten rebounds, and Kennedy Darnell, who shot 5-for-10 from downtown and dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. It was the first time this season that Darnell pulled down eight or more rebounds. Gabby Oborne was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Meanwhile, Blazer took their matchup at home on Saturday with ease, bagging a 74-27 win over Menifee County.
Russell is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 20-6 record this season. As for Blazer, their victory bumped their record up to 20-4.
Russell came up short against Blazer when the teams last played back in January, falling 53-47. Will Russell have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more basketball content.
