Basketball Recap: Mahanoy Area Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Mahanoy Area and Pottsville squared off in some playoff action on Wednesday, but Mahanoy Area had to settle for second. They fell 54-44 to the Pottsville Crimson Tide. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Crimson Tide this season, with their most recent defeat being a 36-34 loss two weeks ago.

Pottsville's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Derek Watkins, who made all 6 shots he took for 16 points. That's the most points Watkins has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Christian Alvarez, who had 13 points.

Mahanoy Area's defeat dropped their record down to 20-3. As for Pottsville, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season.

Mahanoy Area does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Pottsville, they are taking a road trip to square off against Minersville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Minersville knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past seven games -- so hopefully Pottsville likes a good challenge.
