Softball Recap: Marquez Takes Down Orthopaedic in a Playoff Battle

Marquez had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They never let the Orthopaedic Vipers get on the board and left with a 13-0 victory on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Gladiators, who have now won 19 matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.

Darla Sanchez and Kamilah Amezcua made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Sanchez struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Amezcua tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Sanchez has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Sanchez went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Amezcua went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Marquez let Alicia Aguirre and Rosalia Reyes run wild. Aguirre went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Reyes went 2-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and two RBI. Delilah Sanchez was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

Marquez hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in five consecutive contests.

Marquez has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 13 of their last 14 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-2 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Orthopaedic, with the loss, they broke their six-game winning streak and moved their record to 15-7.

Coming up, Marquez will take on Harbor Teacher at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Orthopaedic does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
