Van Buren has gone a perfect 9-0 against Winona recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Bulldogs will welcome the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. Van Buren has given up an average of 11 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Van Buren was handed a 11-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Thursday. They skirted past Bakersfield 14-13. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Bulldogs' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Elli Lewis was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She pitched 5.1 innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-5. She also brought in an RBI, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, Payton Sonsoucie was a standout: she scored three runs and stole four bases while going 4-for-5. Those runs were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Katelyn Warner, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Van Buren was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .432. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Winona was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their 15th straight defeat dating back to last season. They came up short against Ellington, falling 17-2.
Winona saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lexi Crider, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
The win got Van Buren back to even at 2-2. As for Winona, their loss dropped their record down to 0-8.
Everything went Van Buren's way against Winona in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Van Buren made off with a 15-0 victory. Do the Bulldogs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wildcats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
