Softball Recap: Covington Now 5-1 over Last Six Games

The home team had won the previous five meetings between Covington and Millington Central, and Covington kept the tradition alive. The Chargers walked away with an 8-5 victory over the Trojans on Tuesday. This was payback for the Chargers, who suffered a 17-9 loss the last time these two teams met.

Kinslee Hamm made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Hamm wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was AJ McCommon, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2. McCommon also put up a triple, which was her first of the season. Another was Lyv Cromwell, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Covington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Covington has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Millington Central, they dropped their record down to 9-9-1 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Covington will venture away from home to face off against Munford at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Chargers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 6.7 runs per game this season. As for Millington Central, they will challenge Brighton at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cardinals will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Trojans surely won't give up without a fight.
