Basketball Recap: Silver Comes Up Short

After flying high against Santa Teresa on Monday, Silver came back down to earth. The Fighting Colts took a 51-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cathedral Fighting Irish on Tuesday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Fighting Colts came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 54th in New Mexico, while the Fighting Irish are ranked 588th in Texas).

Cathedral was led to victory by John M. Leydon and Miguel Hernandez. Leydon dropped a double-double with 21 points and ten rebounds, while Hernandez went 6-for-10 on his way to 13 points and seven boards. The dominant performance also gave Hernandez a new career-high in field goal percentage (60%). Patricio Chavez was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Silver's defeat dropped their record down to 11-9. As for Cathedral, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 16-11.

Looking ahead, Silver will face off against Deming at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Cathedral, they will square off against Franklin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
