Archbishop Hoban prepares to host a special TOC 2016-17 ceremony where the football team will be nationally recognized by MaxPreps.
MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Archbishop Hoban (Akron, Ohio) Knights have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 12th year honoring football.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Knights ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
At the end of last year, Archbishop Hoban finished its season at 14-1 as the
OHSAA state champion topped with the coveted Army National Guard national ranking. In 2016, the Knights did it again — they capped the season (14-1) as repeat state champions and will receive their second Minuteman trophy on Football TOC.
On Saturday, Dec. 3 head coach Tim Tyrrell led the Archbishop Hoban Knights to a shutout win (30-0) over Trotwood-Madison for their second-straight state title.
Knights quarterback Dann Clark completed 7-of-10 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns, and Todd Sibley rushed for 153 yards and two scores. The team's offense backed by its impenetrable defense — led by Nate Adolph and Reid Allen with seven tackles apiece, and Matt Salopek with two interceptions — secured the title game shutout.
Archbishop Hoban finished highly ranked by MaxPreps —
No.1 in Division III,
No.6 in the state,
No.9 in the Midwest region and
No.38 in the nation. The Knights also finished as the
No.4 team in the MaxPreps medium schools national football rankings.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Archbishop Hoban Knights an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
