Basketball Recap: Monterey Comes Up Short

Monterey lost against Jackson County back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Monterey Wildcats took a blow against the Jackson County Blue Devils, falling 97-51. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 395th, while the Blue Devils are ranked 97th).

Monterey lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Garrett Wessels, who went 8 of 15 from beyond the arc en route to 26 points. Those 26 points gave Wessels a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Tanner Brown, who posted ten points and six rebounds.

Monterey has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-13 record this season. As for Jackson County, they pushed their record up to 12-2 with the win, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Monterey will venture away from home to face off against Watertown at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Jackson County, they are taking a road trip to square off against York Institute at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Jackson County knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past ten matchups -- so hopefully York Institute likes a good challenge.
