Softball Recap: Make It Three in a Row for Northern Guilford

Northern Guilford waltzed into their match on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Everything went their way against the Southern Alamance Patriots as they made off with a 9-3 victory. This was payback for the Nighthawks, who suffered a 16-0 loss the last time these two teams met.

Morgan Headen made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Anna Kimrey was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. Taylor Claassen was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

Northern Guilford was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .387 or higher in three consecutive games.

Northern Guilford's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Southern Alamance, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-8 record this season.

Northern Guilford and Southern Alamance should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. The Nighthawks will take on Southwest Guilford at 6:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (80 vs. 225). Meanwhile, Southern Alamance (ranked 158th) will meet Williams (ranked 377th) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
