Baseball Recap: Hayfield Wins Going Away Against Mount Vernon

Hayfield barely beat Mount Vernon the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Hawks put the hurt on the Majors with a sharp 8-1 victory on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Hawks, who have now won five matches by seven runs or more so far this season.

Nolan Taylor looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Drew Olson, who scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Hayfield is undefeated when Olson posts two or more runs, but 1-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Ross, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Hayfield's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Mount Vernon, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 5-3 record.

Hayfield has already played their next contest, a 7-0 win against South County on the 12th. As for Mount Vernon, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 6-2 loss against Liberty on the 14th.
