Baseball Recap: Independence Drops Season-High Score on Midland Trail

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Independence). Everything went their way against Midland Trail on Friday as they made off with a 20-0 win. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Andrew Coalson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Independence's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 5-9-1 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Reid Warden, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Degan Williams, who went 1-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple.

Independence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .692. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Independence's record is now 8-10-1. As for Midland Trail, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-13 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Independence will venture away from home to square off against Hoover at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Midland Trail, they will head out to take on Charleston Catholic at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
