Recap: West Grand Mustangs vs. De Beque Dragons
The West Grand Mustangs waltzed into their contest on Friday with five straight wins but they left with six. They secured a 41-36 W over De Beque. That result was just more of the same for these two, as West Grand also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2023.
West Grand's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sage Wheatley led the charge by scoring 16 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Wheatley has scored at least a third of West Grand's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sara Lechman, who scored six points along with 11 rebounds and three blocks.
De Beque's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ava Vines, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Vines has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Allyson Sandidge was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds.
West Grand's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.0 points per game. As for De Beque, their loss dropped their record down to 6-4.
West Grand will head out on the road to take on North Park at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. North Park will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 285th, while West Grand is ranked 141st). As for De Beque, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Soroco at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Soroco focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 35 last Saturday.
