The good news for Major League Baseball scouts in 2017 is that getting a look at the top two prospects in the nation involves just a short drive down the San Diego freeway.
Hunter Greene of
Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) is the clear No. 1 player in the MaxPreps Top 100 high school baseball players in the Class of 2017. Ranked No. 1 by both Perfect Game and Baseball American and also tabbed as the No. 1 high school draft pick by a number of MLB mock drafts, Greene is likely to get drafted as a pitcher (his fastball is up to 97 mph) but also ranks as one of the nation's top infielders.

Royce Lewis of
JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), a shortstop who comes in at No. 2 in the MaxPreps Top 100. The returning Player of the Year in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times (over the likes of Greene), Lewis is seen as a possible top 5 pick in the MLB draft.
Greene and Lewis top a list of 100 players that includes 19 players from California - 17 of them from either the Southern or San Diego Section. Nine of those players are in the top 26.
Florida is always a wealth of talent and that hasn't changed in 2017 as the Sunshine State leads the way with 23 players on the MaxPreps Top 100 players list.
Texas and Georgia also contribute their fair share with Georgia placing 11 on the list and Texas adding six.
Players are chosen based on national individual rankings, mock draft placement, All-American teams from 2016 and preseason All-American teams from 2017, and selection to summer all-star teams.
