Football Recap: Gatsbee Gumban's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Covina over Diamond Bar

Covina extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 3-5. They fell 41-28 to the Diamond Bar Brahmas. The Colts were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Brahmas apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.

Covina's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gatsbee Gumban, who rushed for 160 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 8.4 yards per carry. Gumban also punched in two rushing touchdowns, which is notable because the Colts are 2-1 when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns, but 1-4 otherwise. Roy Vazquez was another key signal caller, throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

As for Diamond Bar, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 3-5. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 34.3 points over those games.

Dominic Tortorelli continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 219 yards and four TDs while picking up 13.7 yards per carry. His rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 135 rushing yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Richard Perry, who rushed for 116 yards and one score on only six carries.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Covina will take on rival Walnut at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Diamond Bar is set to face off against their familiar foe Los Altos at 7:00 p.m. on the 24th.
