Softball Recap: Mater Dei Knights vs. Freeburg Midgets

Mater Dei had lost six straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 10-16 to make it seven. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Freeburg Midgets. That's two games in a row now that the Knights have lost by exactly five runs.

As for Freeburg, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 16 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games.

For Freeburg's part, not much got past Aubrey Waeltz, who gave up just six hits to keep Mater Dei off the board. Waeltz has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kylie Whitten, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Aryanna Blomenkamp, who went 3-for-4 with one run.

Coming up, Mater Dei will host Belleville West at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Freeburg does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
