Football Game Preview: Iona Prep Gaels vs. Kellenberg Memorial Firebirds

Iona Prep is a perfect 7-0 against Kellenberg Memorial since September of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Gaels will venture away from home to face off against the Firebirds at 1:30 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.

Iona Prep is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New York's top teams: Monsignor Farrell, who was ranked second at the time (Iona Prep was ranked first). The Gaels took a 28-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lions on Friday. Despite 82 more yards than the Lions, the Gaels couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Despite the loss, Iona Prep got top-tier performance from Julian Guzman, who rushed for 134 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 7.9 yards per carry, and also threw for 182 yards on 17 of 31 attempts. The Gaels also got a significant boost from Crew Davis, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 102 yards.

Meanwhile, Kellenberg Memorial lost to Archbishop Stepinac on the road by a 21-7 margin on Saturday. The Firebirds have struggled against the Crusaders recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Having lost for the first time this season, Iona Prep fell to 6-1. As for Kellenberg Memorial, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-6.

Everything came up roses for Iona Prep against Kellenberg Memorial in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 42-7 win. In that matchup, the Gaels amassed a halftime lead of 35-0, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Saturday.
