Soccer Game Preview: Athens Academy vs. Oglethorpe County

The Athens Academy Spartans will venture away from home to face off against the Oglethorpe County Patriots at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.

Athens Academy's defense heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They blew past Commerce 7-0. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by five goals or more this season.

Meanwhile, after failing to score in their last match, Oglethorpe County made sure to put some goals up on the board against Banks County on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Leopards with a sharp 5-0 win. Given the Patriots' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia soccer rankings (they are ranked 155th, while the Leopards are ranked 329th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Oglethorpe County pushed their record up to 5-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 13 goals over those three games. As for Athens Academy, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

Athens Academy skirted past Oglethorpe County 1-0 in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. Will Athens Academy repeat their success, or does Oglethorpe County have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
