Football Recap: Watkins Memorial Comes Up Short

Watkins Memorial was the 27-21 winner over Mt. Vernon when they last played one another back in October of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Warriors were just a hair shy of victory on Friday and fell 28-27 to the Yellowjackets. While the Warriors didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Yellowjackets 14-7 in the first quarter.

Mason Richards produced another solid effort rushing for 193 yards and one TD while picking up 8.0 yards per carry, and also throwing for 16 yards and one touchdown for Mt. Vernon. Landon Dawson was in the mix too, providing the Yellowjackets with two scores.

Watkins Memorial has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season. As for Mt. Vernon, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 5-2.

Looking ahead, Watkins Memorial will face off against Zanesville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors will be up against the Blue Devils' rather soft defense (which has allowed 45.14 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Mt. Vernon, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Licking Heights at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Yellowjackets will be up against the Hornets' rather soft defense (which has allowed 30.14 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
