Softball Game Preview: Laguna Hills Hawks vs. Newport Harbor Sailors

The Laguna Hills Hawks will venture away from home to face off against the Newport Harbor Sailors at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Thursday just wasn't the day for Laguna Hills' offense. They lost 13-0 to Edison on Thursday. Having soared to a lofty 23 runs in the game before, the Hawks' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Laguna Hills saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Russell, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

Meanwhile, Newport Harbor got the win against St. Anthony on Saturday by a conclusive 15-2. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Sailors.

Virginia Peterson was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit (and only one walk). Peterson was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Abby George was a standout: she scored three runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Dominique Bettencourt, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Newport Harbor's record now sits at 2-0. As for Laguna Hills, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Laguna Hills might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Newport Harbor in their previous meeting back in April of 2021. Can Laguna Hills avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
