Basketball Recap: Del Valle Takes a Loss

If Del Valle was riding high fresh off their 61-32 takedown of Akins last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Del Valle Cardinals came up short against the Austin Maroons on Tuesday, falling 63-42. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 699th, while the Maroons are ranked 243rd).

Jillian Shirk was her usual excellent self, going 6 for 14 on her way to 20 points and three steals for Austin. Shirk is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last nine games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Evelyn Young, who posted eight points and nine rebounds.

Del Valle's loss dropped their record down to 12-15. As for Austin, they have been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 14 games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-10 record this season.

Del Valle will square off against Bowie at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in Bowie's favor as the squad sits on five straight wins at home while Del Valle has been banged up by four consecutive losses on the road. As for Austin, they will take on Dripping Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Austin is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season.
