Baseball Game Preview: Chaparral Firebirds vs. Campo Verde Coyotes

The Chaparral Firebirds will take on the Campo Verde Coyotes at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Chaparral was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last contest, but they sure didn't let that happen against Saguaro on Monday. The Firebirds put the hurt on the Sabercats with a sharp 10-4 victory. The Firebirds might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by six runs or more this season.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Campo Verde, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Mesquite on Friday, sneaking past 11-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Coyotes have posted against the Wildcats since April 21, 2017.

Jackson Weizel looked comfortable as he tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February of 2024.

On the hitting side, Ezekiel Zion was incredible, firing off four doubles, four RBI, and one run while going 4-for-4. Those four doubles gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was John Heilman, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Campo Verde kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 6-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Chaparral is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Campo Verde, their win bumped their record up to 12-8.
