Baseball Recap: Bernalillo Triumphs

On Saturday, the Bernalillo Spartans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the West Mesa Mustangs. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Spartans.

Uriel Castro was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and one triple. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryan Mortensen, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. He has become a key player for Bernalillo: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-5 otherwise. Jacob Duran also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Bernalillo's victory bumped their record up to 4-5. As for West Mesa, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-6.

Coincidentally, Bernalillo and West Mesa will both be playing Moriarty the next time they take the field. West Mesa will host Moriarty at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Bernalillo will play them later in the day, at 1:00 p.m.
