Preview: Salome Frogs vs. El Capitan/Centennial Academy
Salome has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against The El Capitan/Centennial Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Two weeks ago, Salome took their game at home with ease, bagging a 50-8 victory over Anthem Prep. Given Salome's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona football rankings (they are ranked fourth, while Anthem Prep is ranked 28th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Salome's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Edgar Gamez led the charge by rushing for 191 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, while also picking up 31 receiving yards. Jibran Castillo was another key contributor, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries.
Meanwhile, El Capitan/Centennial Academy had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 28.6 points), and they went ahead and made it nine on Friday. They blew past Valley Union 60-16 at home. 60 seems to be a good number for El Capitan/Centennial Academy as the team scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.
El Capitan/Centennial Academy had a senior duo take command as Denim White gained 137 total yards and four touchdowns and Zedakye White threw for 167 yards and four touchdowns on only 11 passes. The team also got some help courtesy of Marion Hammon, who rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Salome's victory bumped their record up to 8-1. As for El Capitan/Centennial Academy, their victory was their ninth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 9-1.
