Game recap

A big 22-point first quarter helped carry Canby (Ore.) to a 43-7 victory over Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, Ore.) on Saturday.

The Cougars scored on a Mike Caruso touchdown run, a touchdown run by Dominic Shorter and a Sam Stelk touchdown pass to Noah Kyllo in the quarter.

Canby was up 36-0 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by Caruso in the first quarter.

Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 36 entering the fourth.

A 22-point first quarter set the table for CHS, which coasted the rest of the way for the victory.

The Cougars' standout player in the win was Stelk. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.

Mark Grothe played well for the Pacers. The senior wide receiver caught one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to three on the year.

Lakeridge's lone touchdown came on a 73-yard pass from Ryan Dunham to Grothe in the third quarter.

Canby had struggled this season, allowing 30.2 points per game. However, CHS's defense dug in and limited LHS well below its season average of 30.5 points per game.

The Cougars also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 41-0.

The victory was a step in the right direction for Canby, which was coming off a 41-20 defeat at the hands of Lake Oswego in its previous game. The loss comes after Lakeridge defeated Lincoln 56-30 last week.

In a 6A Three Rivers game next week Canby (3-4) takes on West Linn, and Lakeridge (2-5) will go up against Lake Oswego also in a 6A Three Rivers game.
