Softball Recap: Corona del Sol Comes Up Short

Corona del Sol extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 13-11 in the process. They lost 18-2 to the Desert Vista Thunder. The Aztecs were not able to make up for their loss to the Thunder from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Corona del Sol saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jami Sheehan, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one run.

As for Desert Vista, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 21-5. Considering they have won 17 matches by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

On Desert Vista's side, Madyson Purdy made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Purdy has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one home run and three RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Mckenzie Leitgen was incredible, firing off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February. Jaymie Larney was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double.

Coming up, Corona del Sol will take on Tucson High Magnet School at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Aztecs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Badgers have averaged an impressive 8.5 runs per game this season. Desert Vista will be paying especially close attention to Corona del Sol's contest: after Corona del Sol faces off against Tucson High Magnet School, they'll take on Desert Vista again at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
