Softball Game Preview: Broad Run Spartans vs. Stone Bridge Bulldogs

Broad Run hasn't had much luck against Stone Bridge recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Spartans will head out to challenge the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. Broad Run is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.1 runs per game this season.

Broad Run took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Loudoun Valley, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Spartans narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Vikings 7-5. While the Spartans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Anna Weltens was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over 6.1 innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Annabelle Widding was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Megan McNally also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Meanwhile, while it was Stone Bridge who put the first points on the board on Thursday, it was Loudoun County who put up more. The Bulldogs lost 21-1 to the Captains. The Bulldogs haven't had much luck with the Captains recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Broad Run has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Stone Bridge, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Broad Run might still be hurting after the 17-11 defeat they got from Stone Bridge when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
